On April 14, 2012, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony returns to Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland has been synonymous with rock and roll since the 1950′s when DJ Alan Freed first coined the phrase.
The 2012 inductees are headed by Guns ‘N Roses, best known for hits Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O Mine, and November Rain. The band embodied the mantra of sex, drugs, and rock and roll before imploding in 1996. Currently on tour, we’ll see if any of the members of the band will make the ceremony.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, are also being inducted, having released their 10th album this year, I’m With You.
Hip-Hop Trio Beastie Boys, pioneers of rap and the first white act to make inroads into the emerging genre are also being honored. Late singer/songwriter Laura Nyro is the only female act this time around. Nyro wrote the 5th Dimension’s Wedding Bell Blues and Blood Sweat and Tears’ When I Die. Influential British Rock Group The Small Faces/The Faces (Stay With Me) will be recognized. Band members Rod Stewart and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood were previously inducted into the Hall of Fame; Stewart as a solo artist in 1994, and Wood as part of the Rolling Stones in 1994. Donovan (Mellow Yellow) completes the Performer inductees.
Guns ‘N Roses and The Faces were on the ballot for the first time. The Chili Peppers had been nominated once before, and the third time proved to be the charm for Beastie Boys and Nyro. Late rock promoter Don Kirschner will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, formerly known as the Non-Performer category. The Ahmet Ertegun award is presented to songwriters, producers, DJs, record execs, journalists and other industry professionals who have had a major influence on the development of rock and roll. To be eligible for induction, an artist must have released their first recording at least 25 years prior to the year of the induction, and have demonstrated unquestionable musical excellence.
Denied entry this year are Donna Summer, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Eric B. and Rakim, War, The Cure and The Spinners. Better luck next year!
