I have nothing but praise for “Light Me Up”, the debut album from The Pretty Reckless, the up and coming band fronted by Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen, at times it is truly hard to believe that she is only seventeen years old, because the music has a certainly maturity that you would not expect to find of someone that age. I am sure some of the maturity comes from the assistance of guitarist Ben Phillips and producer Kato Khandwala, as the album conjures up quite the accurate portrayal of the rock and roll lifestyle especially on tracks like “Miss Nothing”, “Nothing Left To Lose” and the rocking lead single “Make Me Wanna Die”.

The vocal style and lyrical imagery remind me of an almost rebirth of Hole, and the album as a whole certainly pays homage to the grungy sounds of early 90’s rock and this may just be what is missing from the musical landscape these days. Front woman Taylor Momsen has received some criticism in the press these days for her negative commentary about pop music and its stars, but is she necessarily wrong? It has been awhile since we have seen a revival of the angsty guitar driven rock of the 90’s and I say it is due time. The “pop” machine swallowed a lot of solid rock bands in the early 2000’s and The Pretty Reckless is here to prove that this style of rock is not dead, and certainly won’t go down without a fight.

Catch the band performing songs from the album live on their US tour kicking off this week as well as on Lopez Tonight airing February 10th.
